Boy Scout Troop 574 - Troop Position Description
ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE MEMBER

Job Description:

Members of the Advancement Committee will assist the Troop’s Advancement Chair in all matter pertaining to the advancement of the Scouts. This Committee should, ideally, have a minimum of seven members. The members should be assigned to the following duties:

  1. Trail to First Class – These members are responsible for all matters pertaining to the advancement of the Troop youngest Scouts. They will ensure and maintain records for each Scout as he advances to First Class. They will encourage and maintain contact with each Scout along the way. They will ensure that the Scout’s book is properly filled in and that all the requirements have been met before allowing the Scout to progress to the Scoutmaster conference. They will update the Advancement Chair as necessary so that TroopMaster can be kept up-to-date. When the Scout has completed all the requirements for the rank, they will notify the Advancement Chair so TroopMaster can be updated and a Board of review can be scheduled.
  2. First to Life – These members are responsible for all matters pertaining to the advancement of the Troop older Scouts. They will maintain the records for each Scout after he completes First Class and on up to Life Scout. As the Scout completes the merit badges necessary they will ensure that his book is filled in and ensure that the merit badge information if provided to the Advancement Chair so that TroopMaster can be updated. They will ensure that each Scout has fulfilled all the requirements of the rank before allowing them to schedule a Scoutmaster conference. When the Scout has completed all the requirements for the rank, they will notify the Advancement Chair so TroopMaster can be updated and a Board of review can be scheduled.
  3. Life to Eagle – These members are responsible for assisting the Life Scout in the completion of the Eagle rank. They will counsel the Scout in selection of the project and ensure that they are obtaining the necessary merit badges. As the Scout completes the merit badges necessary they will ensure that his book is filled in and ensure that the merit badge information if provided to the Advancement Chair so that TroopMaster can be updated. They will help him in selecting a project mentor and filling out the necessary paperwork. They will ensure that each Scout has fulfilled all the requirements of the rank before allowing them to schedule a Scoutmaster conference. When the Scout has completed all the requirements for the rank, they will notify the Advancement Chair so TroopMaster can be updated and a Board of review can be scheduled.
  4. Boards of Review - This member will maintain a list of adults who can serve on Boards of Review, will work with the Advancement Chair to schedule Boards as soon as is practical after the Scout has completed the requirements for rank advancement. They will also ensure that an adequate number adults is on hand to support the Boards that need to be done.
  5. Be a registered Adult Leader or Member of Committee and be Youth Protection Trained.

An Advancement Committee Member must be at least 18 years of age, be approved by the Troop's chartered organization, and must agree to live by the Scout Oath and Law.

Job Obligations:

  1. Work with the Advancement Chair to ensure each Scout is successfully advancing at his own pace.
  2. Work with the Advancement Chair to ensure that all records at up to date for each Scout for requirements, merit badges, service hours and attendance.
  3. Attend position-specific training as is necessary and available.
  4. Though the wearing of the Scout uniform by the Committee Members is not required, it is strongly encouraged.
  5. Be a good role model for the Scouts in the troop, and live by the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan.
  6. Be a registered Adult Leader or Member of Committee and be Youth Protection Trained.
