ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER

Job Description:

Assistant Scoutmasters serve as assistants to the Scoutmaster and may take his place when he is absent. They attend many troop meetings and go on many hikes and camping trips. The Senior Patrol Leader and other troop leaders look to the Assistant Scoutmasters, along with the Scoutmaster for advice and direction.

Assistant Scoutmasters may be given specific areas of responsibility within the troop, however their job is to guide and supervise the Scouts in carrying out tasks, as much as possible. They are responsible to the Patrol’s they serve first and foremost. 

Leadership Requirements:  

An Assistant Scoutmaster must be at least 18 years of age and approved by the Unit Committee Chairman and the Charter Organization Representative. Adults who are not citizens of the United States but who reside within the country may register with the Boy Scouts of America in any capacity if they agree to abide by the Scout Oath or Promise and the Scout Law, to respect and obey the laws of the United States of America, and to subscribe to the Declaration of Religious Principle.

Excerpt From the Declaration of Religious Principle: 

The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God and, therefore, recognizes the religious element in the training of the member, but is absolutely nonsectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. The Boy Scouts of America’s policy is that the home and the organization or group with which the member is connected shall give definite attention to religious life. Only persons willing to subscribe to the Declaration of Religious Principle and to the Bylaws of the Boy Scouts of America shall be entitled to certificates of leadership.

Job Obligations:

  1. Work with the Scoutmaster and other adult leaders to ensure that the troop is run in accordance with the policies of the Boy Scouts of America and the chartered organization.
  2. Carryout assignments, as given by the Scoutmaster.
  3. Work closely with and be responsible for a Patrol. This should be the primary focus of the ASM.
  4. Avoid, where possible, jobs on the Troop Committee to ensure their ability to focus on their Patrol.
  5. Attend position-specific training.
  6. Wear full uniform to every troop meeting and activity, where a uniform is required.
  7. Be a good role model for the Scouts in the troop, and live by the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan.
  8. Be a registered Adult Leader or Member of Committee and be Youth Protection Trained.
