Troop 574 Committee Attendance and Membership

Troop 574 is managed by a group of adults who handle necessary Troop planning and administration. This group is called the Committee and meets monthly. The Committee has a Chairperson and several other positions, such as Treasurer, Secretary, Advancement Chair, and Quartermaster. The Committee also includes "members," who do not have specific assignments, but participate in the meetings, have a vote in any decisions made by the Committee and volunteer to help in a variety of ways. All parents are invited to attend and are welcome at Committee meetings.

Any time anyone desires to become a voting member of the Committee, they may do so by completing the required BSA Volunteer Leader Adult Application Form, paying the application fee and completing the Youth Protection Training course. This Application authorizes a Criminal Background check, which is required by BSA and the Chartered Organization. If there is an additional nominal fee for the background check, it must be paid by the candidate. Youth Protection Training is also required by the Chartered Organization. It can be completed free of charge on line through the Circle Ten website. Additionally, a Class 1, 2, or 3 Medical Exam form (as appropriate) must be submitted if planning to attend any scout function. Once an adult is registered and Youth Protection trained, they may participate fully in the Committee.

All Committee members are encouraged to become trained. Adult training is coordinated by the Adult Training Chair. To become trained, the adult must read the BSA pamphlet "Troop Committee Guidelines" and view the Fast Start for Boy Scouts video. To become fully trained for Committee membership, the adult must attend Basic Leader Training for Boy Scouts. This course conveys the adult portion of the Boy Scout program, and as such, gives Committee members a better understanding of the operational side of the Troop (working with the boys). No actual camping is required for the basic course, although a follow-on campout for adults is available.

Upon completion of training, a Committee member may wear the Brown scout shirt with the ‘Committee Member’ patch. (The actual Committee meetings are informal and no uniform is generally worn). If the new Committee member completes Basic Leader Training, they will be awarded the “Trained” patch, which is to be worn below the Committee Member patch on the brown shirt.

These policies were generated in September 2003, in order to provide written guidance and clarification regarding Committee membership protocol.
